The stages of anorexia can be different for different people but they all follow a similar pattern in that the symptoms and effects worsened as time progresses. Anorexia nervosa is a treatable disorder, but there is no known specific cure. It is important to note the different stages listed below and their characteristics so that you can begin to identify if you or someone you know is suffering from this condition. In either case, seek treatment immediately so that the condition does not worsen.

Anorexia nervosa, or anorexia for short, is the unreasonable worry of getting fat. This is combined with being relentless about getting as thin as possible. The extremes that people with this disorder go to are incredible and are considered to be the symptoms of anorexia. They feel they MUST reach and keep such a low body weight that it endangers their very lives. The mind set of someone with anorexia is that no matter how much weight they lose, it's never enough. Losing even more weight is an obsession and the effects of anorexia are typically not noticed by the victim.

People with anorexia (anorexics) are in constant fear of gaining weight and becoming fat so they control their food intake to the point of near self-starvation. They may see themselves as fat even when they are already just skin and bones. Anorexics also use food to feel more in control of their lives and as a way to vent off tension, anger, anxiety or other intense negative feelings that might be welling up inside of them. Anorexics tend to be perfectionists. They measure their degree of accomplishment with how much they have avoided taking in food and how thin they have become.

As you learn the eating disorder lingo, like eating disorder abbreviation is ED, ana is an abbreviation for anorexia, or mia is another word for bulimia; don't over use them. It's almost like these words are a badge of honor and if you use them condescendingly or loosely, your daughter will begin to dismiss you. Some girls don't like the abbreviations at all and it will irritate them greatly if you utilize the lingo with them. Sometimes it is best to ask if you can use these words in discussion or if there are other words she would rather you use to refer to the eating disorder

A classic definition of anorexia would be "dying to be thin", literally. By starving themselves, the anorexic deprives their body of essential nutrition. As a result, anorexics have numerous other health issues which include, rapid or irregular heart beat, kidney failure, low blood pressure, broken blood vessels in the face, and other potentially deadly side effects.

There are many hypotheses regarding the actual reasons why anorexics constantly engage in unusual food behaviors. Medical scientists believe that people affected by anorexia are actually trying to achieve self-respect through their actions. It is believed that strict dieting and exaggerated physical exercise are anorexics’ ways of trying to maintain control over their lives. Anorexia usually affects poorly adapted individuals and psychologists believe that anorexics engage in restrictive behaviors in order to prove themselves and other people that they actually hold control over their bodies and lives.
